Best of Spetses

Spetses is one of the five islands of the Saronic Gulf, the closest group to Athens, and a popular escape for Athenians. It is a lovely, pine-covered island which was first inhabited in 2300 BC, became wealthy much later in the 18th century through shipbuilding and ran the British blockade during the Napoleonic Wars. A famous figure of Spetses is Bouboulina Laskerina, the legendary admiral/heroine of the 1821 War of Independence whose home is now a museum and can be visited in the island's town centre.

One of the islands main attraction and a delightful place to explore is the old harbour, lined with old Venetian mansions, restaurants, taverns and bars and filled with boats of every shape and size. Similarly the quay at Dapia is a hive of activity. The island's coastline offers numerous small coves and many good beaches, some with watersports. Aghia Paraskevi is considered the best beach with sand and pebbles, and Aghia Anargyri, the largest with watersports, is close to the Bekiri cave where Spetsiots hid from the Turks. No cars are permitted on the island but motorbikes and cycles can be hired to get around. Colourful horse drawn carriages make a more relaxing alternative.
