The eruption that formed Santorini some three and a half thousand years ago must have been spectacular, the island, a caldera or fragment of the original crater. Sugar cube houses and blue-domed churches cling to multi coloured cliffs of lava and pumice. The interior plains are picked out in tomato red and pistachio green while the beaches are black.
Fira, Santorini's capital, and the pretty village of Oia offer cosmopolitan nightlife and tempting shopping. As the sun sets, sit outside a café or taverna, a glass of local wine in your hand and a camera at the ready.
From its hillside location in the village of Imerovigli, the Astra has breathtaking views of the caldera. Just two kilometres away is lively Fira town with its many shops and fashionable bars and restaurants, where you can relax and absorb the cosmopolitan atmosphere.
The Zannos Melathron Hotel sits alongside the entrance to the remains of the medieval Pyrgos Castle, approx. six kms from Fira Town, with a breathtaking view of the whole island and the Caldera.
Perivolas is a charming property poised on the edge of a cliff in the lovely village of Oia. Its 16 traditional houses have been beautifully converted from old cave wineries in a way that maintains the buildings' original attributes, including the impressive vaulted ceilings.
A delightful collection of five traditional cave houses, converted into individually themed, luxurious suites, around an 18th century mansion.
