Best of Ioannina

The region of Epirus, one of the country's richest in animal and plant life, lies in the north west of the Greek mainland and extends from the peaks of the Pindus mountains to the shores of the Ionian Seas. It is a mountainous region with a long history dating back as far as 4,000 BC and has the city of Ioannina, on the western shore of Lake Pamvotis, as its capital. Ioannina prospered during the Ottoman times when it's famous Craftsmen's Guilds were formed and consequently the city is a fascinating mixture of Turkish architecture and the local crafts of silversmithing and woodcarving. Nearby attractions include the Perama Cava and the ancient site of Dodoni with its 3rd century BC threatre, acropolis and Sanctuary of Zeus.
