Best of Hydra

This rocky Saronic Gulf Isle is arguably one of the most photographed and painted in the whole of Greece, with its uniquely attractive natural harbour overlooked in spectacular fashion by the town rising up the steep hillsides like an ancient amphitheatre of gracious stone and pastel coloured 19th century mansions. The island is almost completely barren, even the water is imported from the mainland and has no beaches to speak of. Today it is popular with artists, writers and even its fair share of celebrities. Attracted by the beautiful town and harbour and most importantly, the complete lack of motorised traffic which is banned (except for council utility vehicles). Transport is provided by hundreds of donkeys which are far better suited to the narrow, stepped streets. There is a local boat service to a pleasant beach, or swim in the crystal clear waters from swimming platforms built into the town's rocky coastline.

Hydra is a real gem, steeped in a proud seafaring tradition of a by gone age. Fly to Athens and transfer by hydrofoil (crossing time 1hr 15 mins).
