The three fingers of the Halkidiki Peninsula just into the Aegean south east of Thessalonika in Northern Greece. From the sandy beach and stone-built houses of Nikiti, the coastline of Sithonia is a collection of bays, small inlets, modern resorts and fishing harbours. Kalamitsi has a gorgeous beach close to the rugged tip. The road continues round to Sarti with its views of Mount Athos.
The Athos Peninsula is a curiosity. Ouranoupolis or Heaven's City is in reality a village near the'border' with the monastic area of Athos - part of Greece yet administered by a holy council. Athos dates back to the Byzantine Empire, and the Julian calendar is still used. As a result, the 1700-odd monks live 13 days behind the rest of the country.
A special entry permit must be obtained in advance. Alas, no females are allowed in although hens are tolerated! The white peak of Mount Athos dominates a wildlife haven interspersed with 20 monasteries. Most visitors content themselves to a cruise around this extraordinary enclave before returning to the beaches of the secular, Lower Peninsula.
Set in a prime location overlooking the sea just four kms from the picturesque village of Ouranoupolis is the delightful Eagles Palace. With a beautiful sandy beach in front and surrounded by the lush woodlands of the Athos Peninsula, the hotel commands an enviable position.
Perched on a bluff overlooking the turquoise waters of the Aegean on the picturesque Sithonia Peninsula, this luxurious hideaway is set amidst verdant pine trees, lush gardens and golden sand beaches.
