Best of Corfu

Corfu is a verdant contrast to the stark beauty of the Aegean islands. Olive, orange and lemon groves, slender cypresses and vibrant wildflowers are the epitome of Homer's 'beautiful and rich land'. Centuries of Roman and Venetian rule have profoundly influenced Corfu's character. It was the British, however, who finally relinquished the Ionian Islands to Greece in 1864.

The capital, Corfu Town, lies on the east coast. Twin fortresses are the instant landmarks, but more subtle traces of history pervade as you wander the capital's streets. The cricket pitch on The Spianada or esplanade. The arcades of The Liston modelled on Paris' Rue de Rivoli. The muted ochres and pinks of Venice in the narrow alleyways of the Old Town. Byzantine churches and the Church of Agios Spyridon, the island's patron saint. Nearby is the peninsula of Kanoni. The villa of Mon Repos was the Duke of Edinburgh's birthplace, but it is the islets of Moni Vlahernas and Mouse Island that captivate the eye. To the north, the mountains of Albania are visible from the summit of Mount Pantokrator. Coastal villages like Roda retain their authenticity.

To the west, mountain villages and the Byzantine ruins of Angelokastro perch above the bays of PaleoKastritsa. The bunkers of Corfu Golf Course are just a short drive from the huge beach of Glyfada. Cape Asprokavos at the wooded southern tip points towards Paxos and Antipaxos, Corfu's neighbours. The land peters out, but the island's wide appeal endures.
